“What should one do in Big Pine Key?”

Grab a brew and sit tight; because you will find out in this article.

What Is Big Pine Key FL Known For?

Big Pine Key is part of a set of small islands; with Big Pine being the biggest. People come here to escape the Miami life for a relaxing vacation.

While it does get busy (at times!), it’s much less hectic than other parts of Florida.

Where Is Big Pine Key?

Big Pine Key is located 104 miles southwest of Miami, and 82 miles south of the Everglades. If you drive from Miami, the journey will take 2 hours and 52 minutes.

As discussed previously, Big Pine is one of many small islands. These islands stretch over 180 miles, and are connected by 42 bridges. Many people drive the entire stretch, stopping off at all the Florida Keys and finishing at Key West.

So the question remains…

“How far is Big Pine Key to Key West?”

Glad you asked.

The journey itself takes 28 miles, costing you 42 minutes by car. If you don’t want to spend your vacation driving, you can also take the train for a small cost of $4 to $6.

Things To do In Big Pine Key

Relax On Sandspur Beach

Relax On Sandspur Beach

This Big Pine Key Beach is nothing short of paradise.

Does beautiful clear waters, soft sand, and a relaxing atmosphere peak your interest?

You’ll find all that (and more!!) at Sandspur Beach. It recently reopened in May 2022 after being destroyed by Hurricane Irma 4 years ago.

The shallow waters make it an excellent location for children. When you compare it to Calusa Beach, Sandspur is much less crowded, making it easier to keep an eye on the kids.

It also makes for a more relaxing atmosphere.

After all, that’s what beaches are for, huh!?

A fan favorite of Sandspur beach is snorkeling. There are numerous places to rent the equipment, making it easier than ever to see the underwater world.

Or you could go snorkeling out at sea (more on that later!).

For the wildlife lovers (deers, to be specific!), National Key Deer Refuge is a must-see. This 9,200 acres refuge was designed to protect endangered species like the Key Deers.

When you typically encounter wild deers, they are easily startled.

But not here!

Don’t be surprised when these deers show extreme confidence. This is because they are used to seeing people wandering around.

So a word of warning…

Don’t drive too fast, as they may be crossing the road.

In fact, why not ditch the car altogether!?

Most people find the National Key Deer Refuge better on foot. There are numerous hiking trails to follow, making for a more memorable experience.

Bahia Honda State Park is the most popular destination in Florida Keys Big Pine.

And for good reason!

Not only does it host some of the best beaches (Sandspur and Calusa), but it’s filled with cool activities.

And if you’re anything like us, activities are the key to a good vacation!

If you’re an Instagram addict, you can head over to the Old Bahia Honda Bridge for some breathtaking views. You can see both beaches from this location, so make sure to snap some bada** pictures.

But that’s not the only instagrammable location at Bahia Honda State Park.

If you’re a night owl, you can wait until the sun sets to enjoy some stargazing.

The only way we can describe it is…

Magical.

Snorkeling With A Twist

Snorkeling With A Twist

While you’re having the time of your life at Bahia Honda State Park, you can give snorkeling a go.

You can rent your own snorkeling gear at Sandspur or Calusa beach…

But we prefer to step things up a notch.

There are daily tours on the Coral Reef Park Co boat, allowing passengers to explore the Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary – underwater! The tours run every day at 9:30AM and 1:30PM, and cost $29.95 per person.

Kids can hop aboard for only $24.95.

Once you’ve paid for admission, you can also rent snorkeling equipment for Looe Key National marine Sanctuary.

Masks, fins, half wetsuits, and safety vests are some of the equipment available to rent. Keep in mind that you will need to pay a security deposit when hiring equipment.

Explore The Blue Hole

Explore The Blue Hole

If you want to see some alligators while in the Florida Keys, make sure to stop off at Blue Hole.

Most people make the mistake of visiting during the morning when the alligators are not around. Our advice? Visit after 4pm, and you’re bound to see some!

If you’re lucky, you’ll also spot some key deer.

Just don’t feed the animals, as it’s illegal!

The area itself consists of a small, yet beautiful, pond. There is a trail, so you can walk around and experience nature.

And the best thing? It doesn’t cost a dime!
